Excellence and Happiness

June 7, 2012 § 1 Comment

Below is a direct quote from Orrin Woodward’s book Resolved: 13 Resolutions for LIFE. In his chapter on ┬áKeeping Score, he does a fantastic job of connecting the pursuit of excellence and the pursuit of happiness, which is so often separated in people’s minds.

“Society today has experienced a growing material abundance, but simultaneously, a growing happiness scarcity. In the pursuit of happiness, people make two common errors. First, they believe that by ceasing to strive for excellence they can enjoy peace and happiness in mediocrity. Second, on the other side of the pendulum, is when people believe that material wealth can make them happy. The truth is that happiness cannot be pursued directly at all, but instead, is a result of striving to improve every day on life’s journey. True success isn’t the destination, but the journey, and happiness is the by-product in the pursuit of a goal or dream bigger than oneself. Both sides of the pendulum steal true joy, one by boring complacency, the other by restless discontent.”
